This is one of the pieces of my work that I am very pleased to present in my portfolio. As I stated in my introduction, I have been working for a newspaper in Nashville for over 20 years. It is a weekly published paper that is aimed toward the minority communities of the city, and surrounding communities. For those who may not be familiar with this newspaper, The Nashville PRIDE was founded in 1988 by Dr. Larry D. Davis. The paper has been very successful over the years in readership, publication, and circulation. It has earned the reputation as being
"The Voice of a Proud Community"
I started working for the paper in January of 1996. My role has been assistant production manager. Mainly what I do is design the page layouts with stories, ads, and photos. It can be quite complicated, since everything has to be as neat and organized as possible, especially from the standpoint of a designer like myself.
Back when I started, I would do a lot of spell and grammar checking with some editing on the side. I was also responsible for creating various ads. It has been a very diverse environment where I work, and I've seen a lot of changes take place in our business throughout the years. Some good, some not so good.
Anyhow, our paper consists of two 8-page sections. The main section, and an insert section called Our Times. This is what contains vital pages such as Education, Health, Business, Entertainment, and Sports. But it is also used as a special edition when historically Black-related events take place each year.
I have been in charge of putting together this section. The thumbnail image is the front page from one of our weekly copies. It's just to give you an idea of my work. You can always pick up a copy of our paper, call, subscribe or visit the official website at www.pridepublishinggroup.com. You'll find "my" section containing all my work.
